BDSM in Danielle Steel Novel

I just finished another erotic novel, "Raw Silk" by Lisabet Sarai. Iīve enjoyed some of the explicit erotic scenarios immensely. Especially, of course, the D/s related ones. Sarai has a huge talent for detailed sexual descriptions, and for that alone, Iīll recommend this book. I do have some reservations about it, though.

First of all, to put it bluntly, everything but the "porn" is awful. I know itīs a bit harsh, but if I was to judge this book by my normal literary standards, Iīd put it on the same shelf as Danielle Steel or some other female romantic author targeting the huge "pink" market of dreamy women across the planet. The characters are very, very sketchy and stereotypical. The men fall in love (and for life, I suspect) the moment they lay eyes on our heroine, Katherine. The exotic setting and the fact that one of her lovers is a handsome Thai prince (for Godīs sake!!) adds to the toe-curling banality that characterizes female romantic longing. Itīs all about strong hands and square jaws and steely eyes and a soft, aching heart that (preferably in secret) bleeds from love of the heroine. And I canīt stand it. But then again, I never played princess as a child.

The fact that I just couldnīt take any of the characters seriously, that the setting was as banal as any porn flick and that the ROMANTIC LOVE-thang seemed to ooze from every page, meant that I ended up reading it superficially. Blahblahblah - oh, hereīs the porn - blahblah - Oh, Katherine - blahblah.

I am a bit cynical, I know. But I just donīt like it when love becomes this psychological black box that is supposed to contain all motivation. All explanation. So, if Iīm going to read erotica, I prefer RGīs place.  Anytime.

I bought Pauline Réageīs "Story of O" some time back, and I canīt seem to finish the damned thing. To begin with, I found it hot an intriguing, but after a little while the passive stance of the "heroine" started to get to my nerves. It irritates me immensely that the only motivating factor behind her (in)actions, the only reason she accepts her sexual submission, is her enormous, romantic, self-erasing love for her boyfriend, René.

Although itīs probably a completely logical and sufficient explanation, it creates a black box in terms of the power exchange between the characters. Because her love is so strong, she submits to anything. And I miss a detailed description of these dynamics, the conquering and the over-powering, the manipulation and domination of a free will. Oīs will is overpowered once and for all by her love for René (and it is so before the story even begins), and therefore the book lacks any struggle, any exchange of control, any of the things which are the main reasons BDSM is such a turn on to me.
